Alprazolam

Generic Name: alprazolam (al PRAY zoe lam)

Brand name: Niravam, Xanax, Xanax XR

Drug interactions:

Alprazolam is in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peens). Alprazolam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor. Alprazolam Orally Disintegrating Tablets is a benzodiazepine. It works by slowing down the movement of chemicals in the brain. This results in a reduction in nervous tension. Benzodiazepines belong to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to alprazolam or to other benzodiazepines, such as chlordiazepoxide (Librium), clorazepate (Tranxene), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), or oxazepam (Serax). Do not use this medication if you have acute narrow-angle glaucoma, severe liver disease, or certain severe mental problems (eg, psychosis). Some benzodiazepines are used to treat insomnia (trouble in sleeping). However, if used regularly (for example, every day) for insomnia, they usually are not effective for more than a few weeks.
