Zolpidem belongs to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants (medicines that slow down the nervous system). Zolpidem (ambien) is a sedative, also called a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia). Some medical conditions may interact with Ambien Tablets. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions. Zolpidem (ambien) helps you get to sleep faster and sleep through the night. Zolpidem may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Use Ambien Tablets as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. Sleep medicines may cause a special type of memory loss or ``amnesia''. When this occurs, a person does not remember what has happened during the several hours between use of the medicine and the time when its effects wear off.
