Anastrozole (arimidex) is a medicine that is used to treat breast cancer. Arimidex is an aromatase inhibitor. It works by lowering blood estradiol concentrations, which may decrease the size and growth of the tumor. Anastrozole blocks the use of estrogen by certain types of breast cancer that require estrogen to grow. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Many breast cancer tumors grow in response to estrogen. This medicine interferes with the production of estrogen in the body. In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. It is not known whether anastrozole passes into breast milk. Do not take anastrozole if you are breast-feeding a baby.
