Atenolol

Generic Name: atenolol (ah TEN oh lol)

Brand name: Tenormin

Drug interactions:

Atenolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Beta-blockers are used in the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). Atenolol is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. Atenolol may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. Do not stop taking atenolol without first talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. To reduce nighttime urination, take atenolol and chlorthalidone before 6 p.m. and preferably in the morning.
