Lorazepam (ativan) is in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peens). Lorazepam (ativan) affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety. Benzodiazepines belong to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants (medicines that slow down the nervous system). Many of the benzodiazepines are used in the treatment of other conditions, also. Lorazepam (ativan) is used to treat anxiety disorders. Some medical conditions may interact with Ativan Tablets. Tell your health care provider if you have any medical conditions. Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to benzodiazepines. Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes. Do not drink alcohol while taking lorazepam (ativan). This medication can increase the effects of alcohol.
