Lamotrigine (lamictal) is an antiepileptic medication, also called an anticonvulsant. Lamotrigine (lamictal) is used to help control some types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. This medicine cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it. It may be used alone or with other medicines. It may also be used to delay the occurrence of mood problems in certain patients with bipolar disorder. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Lamotrigine (lamictal) has not been studied in pregnant women. However, if you might become pregnant while taking lamotrigine (lamictal), your doctor may want you to take folic acid supplements. This medication may cause severe or life-threatening skin rash, especially in children. Serious skin rash may also be more likely to occur if you are taking lamotrigine together with valproic acid (Depakene) or divalproex (Depakote).
